DRAGON-HORSE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH

YUAN BOUNDLESS™ No. 2 | 元无界(二)— 龙马乾坤 · 元亨利贞 is the second completed artwork within Jingmin Ren’s ongoing YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界 project.

The work brings together two interconnected expressions: “龙马乾坤 | Lóng Mǎ Qián Kūn” and “元亨利贞 | Yuán Hēng Lì Zhēn.”

“龙马乾坤” evokes the Dragon-Horse moving between Heaven and Earth. Rather than depicting a literal figure, the work presents the Dragon-Horse as a form of spiritual energy—combining the transformative power of the dragon with the vitality, courage and forward momentum of the horse.

Originating in the I Ching, “元亨利贞” expresses four interconnected qualities of creation: origin, harmonious unfolding, beneficial growth and steadfast integrity. Within the work, these principles form a philosophical cycle through which vision develops into action while remaining grounded in inner balance.

Large black calligraphic forms move across the surface in changing scales and directions. Instead of following a single conventional reading order, the characters create a spatial field in which language is experienced through rhythm, movement, density and interval.

The red yin-yang seal functions as a point of balance within the composition, while the surrounding hand-stamped seals connect calligraphy with cultural memory, material and time.

The 3D fine-art inkjet-printed textured Xuan paper is an active part of the artwork. Its pale blue, pink and green currents evoke clouds, water and atmospheric movement. These organic patterns interact with the black ink and red seals, allowing the written forms to appear as though they are emerging from and returning to a larger energetic field.

The work explores both visible and invisible energy. Visible energy is expressed through the strength of the brush, the movement of the characters and the contrast between ink, seals and paper. Invisible energy is carried through breath, intention, philosophical meaning and the relationship between Heaven, Earth and human awareness.

YUAN BOUNDLESS™ No. 2 was presented digitally in Times Square, New York, in 2026, following an invitation from Plogix Gallery. Within the speed, light and movement of Times Square, the work introduced the language of contemporary Chinese calligraphy and Eastern cosmology into a global public space.
