VISION
Where are we? Who are we? What remains?
These questions run through my interdisciplinary practice, moving between cosmic scale, natural cycles and intimate human experience.
My work explores time, light, nature, cultural astronomy and inner experience through painting, Chinese calligraphy, seal imprints, mixed media, public art and sculpture. I am interested in how we locate ourselves within cycles of nature, cultural memory and lived time, and how we continually reconsider our relationship with the world around us.
Where are we?
Through Solar Longitude – Time Orbit and my ongoing research into Spatial Time, I explore relationships between the Sun, Earth, seasonal change and human perception.
Solar longitude provides a shared astronomical coordinate, while seasonal experience shifts across hemisphere, ecology and place. Art becomes a way for me to reconsider how we perceive our relationship with natural cycles and time.
Who are we?
In XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年, I turn from cosmic scale towards lived experience. Drawing upon a working collection of approximately 1,000 Chinese leisure seals (闲章), together with papers of different material qualities, I explore how touch, language, memory and emotion guide acts of selection and imprinting.
Selection sometimes begins with touch. Material, body, language and memory enter into resonance through this process, and the resulting imprint becomes a trace of a particular encounter in lived time.
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界
This ongoing body of work explores the shifting relationships between self and world, inner and outer experience, time and space.
Yuan (元) points towards origin, beginning and becoming; Boundless (无界) does not imply the erasure of difference, but considers how new relationships and meanings may emerge when established boundaries are opened.
In some works, this idea also unfolds through a dialogue between calligraphy and seal imprints. A seal may question, respond to, extend or reinterpret the written form, allowing meaning to emerge through the relationship between the two.
What remains?
I do not seek a final answer.
Perhaps what remains are traces of shared human experience and emotion—our encounters with nature, with one another, and with ourselves.
For me, art cannot fully answer this question. It gives form to a trace, a feeling, a memory or a moment of resonance, while leaving space for what remains beyond words.

YUAN BOUNDLESS™ |

Practice Development
Over more than a decade of artistic practice, Jingmin Ren 任静敏 (JMREN®) has developed an interdisciplinary body of work spanning painting, Chinese calligraphy, public art, sculpture, digital presentation and artistic research.
Her practice has evolved through sustained explorations of creation, light, spiritual energy, inner experience, nature and the passage of time, gradually expanding toward broader investigations of astronomy, seasonal knowledge, place and cultural perspectives.
From the early Genesis paintings and the sustained observation of sunlight in Sydney Morning, through Flow of Light and the development of XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年 and YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界, Ren’s practice reflects a continuing enquiry into relationships between the inner world and the natural world, the individual and the cosmos, time and space, cultural knowledge and lived experience.
Her current research-led practice, Solar Longitude, extends these long-standing concerns through direct engagement with the relationship between the Sun, Earth, astronomical time, seasonal change and place.
Current Research & Public Art
Solar Longitude |
Solar Longitude is Ren’s current interdisciplinary artistic research exploring solar longitude (太阳黄经), the Twenty-Four Solar Terms (二十四节气), Southern Hemisphere seasonal translation and Spatial Time.
The research investigates a central question: how can the same astronomical coordinate be experienced through different seasons, landscapes, ecological conditions and cultural perspectives?
Solar Longitude – Time Orbit |
Bondi Sea Wall, Sydney | 2026
Created as a large-scale public artwork at Sydney’s Bondi Sea Wall, Solar Longitude – Time Orbit brings together painting, Chinese calligraphy, astronomical coordinates, seasonal knowledge and observations of the local natural environment.
Using solar longitude and the Twenty-Four Solar Terms as its temporal framework, the work examines the relationship between a globally shared astronomical system and the distinct seasonal experience of the Southern Hemisphere.
The project has subsequently expanded beyond the mural into artistic research and sculptural investigation, contributing to Ren’s continuing exploration of seasonal translation, shared astronomical time and Spatial Time.
Evolution of Practice
Genesis | 2012
Genesis marks an early foundation in Ren’s artistic practice. Originally created as a commissioned series of oil paintings for St. Martha’s Catholic School in Strathfield, Sydney, the works responded to the Biblical Book of Genesis through Ren’s own visual language.
Exploring themes of creation, light, nature and the emergence of life, the series reflects early questions that would continue to evolve throughout her later practice: ideas of origin, the formation of the visible world, and humanity’s relationship with nature and the larger universe.
While Genesis belongs to a distinct early period of Ren’s practice, its exploration of origin, creation and light can now be understood as part of a longer artistic trajectory.
Sydney Morning
Sydney Morning developed through Ren’s sustained observation of Sydney’s morning light and sunrise over a period of several years.
Through repeated observation of changing light, atmosphere and the natural environment, the series deepened her interest in light as both a physical phenomenon and an experience of time.
This practice of observing recurring natural rhythms became an important foundation for Ren’s later investigations of light, temporal experience and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
Flow of Light
Flow of Light is a long-running body of work exploring light, movement, energy and the rhythms of the natural world.
Developed primarily through painting and evolving across multiple exhibitions, the series reflects Ren’s sustained interest in light not only as a visible phenomenon, but also as a means of experiencing movement, atmosphere, inner perception and the passage of time.
Together with Sydney Morning, Flow of Light forms an important stage in Ren’s artistic development. Its exploration of light, nature, energy and temporal experience continues to resonate through her later interdisciplinary practice.
XINYIN LIUNIAN® |
XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年 is a long-term artistic philosophy and seal-based body of work exploring the relationship between inner experience, spiritual energy and the passage of time.
The practice grows from Ren’s long-standing engagement with Chinese seal culture and her personal collection of more than 1,000 Chinese seals, particularly xianzhang (闲章), which often carry poetic, philosophical and personal expressions. In response to a particular feeling or reflection, she selects a resonant seal and bookmark, using the imprint to record that moment of lived experience.
Bringing together Chinese calligraphy, seals, imprints, philosophical thought and contemporary artistic practice, XINYIN LIUNIAN approaches each impression as a trace of time — capturing an encounter between words, thought and inner experience, and leaving a unique imprint within the continuing flow of life.
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界 is an evolving interdisciplinary body of work exploring origin, space, time, consciousness and humanity’s relationship with the universe.
Taking Yuan (元) — origin, beginning and generative potential — as a philosophical point of departure, the project has developed across calligraphy, painting, digital presentation and sculpture.
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ exists in dialogue with XINYIN LIUNIAN®. While XINYIN LIUNIAN explores the imprint of inner experience through time, YUAN BOUNDLESS expands the enquiry outward — from the individual toward space, nature and the cosmos.
Its recent sculptural development intersects with Ren’s Solar Longitude research, bringing questions of astronomical time, hemispheric perspective and humanity’s shared relationship with the Sun and Earth into three-dimensional form.

Solar Longitude
Solar Longitude – Time Orbit
Bondi Sea Wall, Sydney | 2026
Sydney Morning
Flow of Light
XINYIN LIUNIAN® |
XINYIN LIUNIAN® |
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ |
