BEYOND SELF, ACHIEVEMENT AND NAME
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ No. 1 | 元无界(一) is the first artwork from Jingmin Ren’s evolving YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界 project. It brings together contemporary Chinese calligraphy, hand-stamped seals, Eastern philosophy and the material qualities of 3D-textured Xuan paper.
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ is not a fixed series, but an ongoing path of thought and energy that continues to unfold across different mediums, spaces and periods of time.
The work is rooted in three states of realised being described in Zhuangzi’s Free and Easy Wandering | 逍遥游:
The Perfected Person — 至人无己
Transcending attachment to the self and becoming united with all things.
The Spiritual Person — 神人无功
Acting without attachment to achievement or personal merit.
The Sage — 圣人无名
Completing without seeking recognition or name, and returning to the natural course of existence.
These are not presented as external identities or social roles. Together, they describe a process of inner cultivation: releasing attachment to the self, achievement and reputation, and moving toward a freer relationship with existence.
In the work, the three calligraphic phrases move across the golden surface through changing scales, directions and spatial relationships. Rather than following a single conventional reading order, the characters form an open visual field. Writing is experienced not only as language, but also through gesture, rhythm, breath, density and interval.
“Yuan | 元” points toward origin—the undivided source before differentiation. “Boundless | 无界” suggests a state beyond fixed definitions and boundaries. Together, they open a space before language and beyond form, where perception loosens its hold and existence returns to a more natural flow.
The work explores both visible and invisible energy. Visible energy appears through the force of the brush, the contrast between black ink and the luminous golden ground, and the changing textures of the paper. Invisible energy is carried through breath, intention, awareness, philosophical meaning and the temporal act of writing.
The red hand-stamped seals punctuate and connect the calligraphic structure. Each impression carries cultural memory while functioning as a concentrated point of energy, creating relationships between language, material, time and inner consciousness.
The 3D fine-art inkjet-printed textured Xuan paper is not treated as a passive background. Its golden tones, raised organic textures and flowing patterns interact with the handwritten calligraphy and hand-stamped seals. The surface suggests shifting layers of light, landscape and energy, allowing the written forms to appear as though they are emerging from—and returning to—a larger field.
Within the visible calligraphy, the work points toward what cannot be directly seen: the gradual release of attachment, the refinement of awareness and the possibility of moving beyond the boundaries imposed by the self.
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ No. 1 was presented in Times Square, New York, through Plogix Gallery in 2026. Appearing within a site defined by speed, intensity and constant visual stimulation, the work became a brief but genuine pause—inviting attention to move away from the external spectacle and return inward.
This first artwork is offered as a seed: within the visible, it points toward the invisible, responding in a contemporary context to Zhuangzi’s vision of free and easy wandering.
YUAN BOUNDLESS™ | 元无界 will continue to unfold across mediums, spaces and time.
