Harmony, Balance and the Flow of Life
Yin and Yang is an oil painting from Jingmin Ren’s Flow of Light Series. The work draws upon the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of yin and yang, in which seemingly opposing forces are understood as complementary, interconnected and interdependent aspects of the natural world.
Within Chinese cosmology, yin and yang emerge from the universe’s primordial energy and continually interact to generate movement, transformation and life. Daoist thought encourages alignment with these natural rhythms, seeking balance within oneself and harmony with the wider cosmos.
In the painting, dolphins swim freely through a luminous universe, following streams of light and energy. Their intelligence and social connection evoke trust, companionship and mutual support. Jellyfish—among the most ancient forms of animal life—appear as guiding presences, leading the dolphins through the flowing light.
Colour becomes an expression of the artist’s inner experience. As the dolphins move together through the composition, their shared movement suggests that individuals can support and uplift one another, allowing energy to circulate in a harmonious and positive cycle.
Through its meeting of cosmic space, marine life and Chinese philosophy, Yin and Yang reflects on balance, connection and humanity’s place within the living rhythms of the universe.
The Flow of Light Series has been presented in multiple exhibitions and public contexts in Sydney, including at the Chinese Cultural Centre in 2021 and at Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre in 2023 and 2025. Selected works from the series were also featured in digital presentations in Times Square, New York, and London in 2024, presented by Plogix Gallery.
