Chinese ink and seal imprints on gold-flecked yellow xuan paper
Three-panel work

The Three Realms of Zhuangzi explores three interconnected philosophical states through calligraphy, spatial composition and seal imprints.

The three panels draw upon distinct passages associated with Zhuangzi’s philosophical thought:

“天地与我并生,万物与我为一”
Heaven and Earth arise together with me; the myriad things and I are one.

“乘云气,御飞龙,而游乎四海之外”
Riding the clouds and flying with the dragon, wandering beyond the four seas.

“乘天地之正,御六气之辩”
Following the course of Heaven and Earth and riding the transformations of the six vital forces.

Across the three panels, variations in scale, rhythm and movement allow the written forms to shift between different states of perception and experience. The luminous gold-flecked yellow xuan paper unifies the work, while black ink and red seal imprints establish a changing relationship between writing, space and visual rhythm.

The multiple xianzhang (闲章, leisure seals) are integral to the work. Rather than functioning solely as signatures or decorative elements, they interact with the calligraphic forms as responses, pauses and extensions of meaning. Through this relationship, calligraphy and seal imprints become two voices within the same composition.
