Sydney Morning No. 1 belongs to Jingmin Ren’s Sydney Morning Series, a body of oil paintings developed through nearly three years of sustained observation and photography of Sydney’s sunrises.
During this period, Ren observed the sky as a continually changing field of light, colour and atmosphere. These daily encounters deepened her connection with creation and became the foundation for paintings exploring renewal, spiritual energy and the emotional experience of the natural world.
In Sydney Morning No. 1, fiery layers of red, orange and gold move across a deep and turbulent sky. Dark clouds gather above the horizon as an intense field of light emerges from within, illuminating the surrounding atmosphere.
The energetic brushwork gives the clouds a sense of movement and transformation. Light does not appear as something still or distant; it pushes through darkness, turning the sunrise into an experience of tension, vitality and awakening.
Rather than depicting a single morning as a fixed landscape, the painting brings together observation, memory and emotional response. The contrast between shadow and illumination expresses a moment of transition—the instant when darkness begins to give way to the possibility of a new day.
The Sydney Morning Series received the International Outstanding Female Artist Award at the Third International Painting Festival of Hawaii in 2017. Jingmin Ren attended as an honoured guest at the International Convention Art Exhibition Centre in Hawaii, where the recognition was presented by Hawaii State House Representative Calvin K. Y. Say.
