STILLNESS WITHIN THE MOVING SEA
Standing Independently Amidst Mountains and Seas No. 3 | 独立山海间（三） belongs to Jingmin Ren’s three-part XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年 — Bondi Series, created during her Bondi Pavilion Artist Studio Residency in September 2025.
In this work, powerful waves move across the foreground and break against a solitary rock beneath an expansive blue sky. A small sailing boat appears near the distant horizon, creating a quiet counterpoint to the force and movement of the sea.
The painting explores visible and invisible forms of energy. Visible energy is expressed through the rising waves, luminous spray, shifting colours and rhythmic movement of the water. Invisible energy is suggested through wind, gravity, tidal forces, time and the spiritual connection between the individual and the natural world.
The isolated rock remains present within the continuously changing sea. Its stillness does not suggest separation from movement; instead, it reveals a different form of energy—an inner strength capable of existing within change.
The red seal inscription “Standing Independently Amidst Mountains and Seas | 独立山海间” occupies the open sky, while another seal mark enters the moving water below. Positioned between sky and sea, the seal imagery connects cultural memory, physical landscape and inner perception.
Through the integration of painting and Chinese seal language, the work transforms the Bondi coast into a space where visible form and invisible force coexist. The sea becomes both a physical environment and a metaphor for the passage of time, while the solitary rock reflects resilience, independence and spiritual stillness.
XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年 is Jingmin Ren’s ongoing interdisciplinary practice developed through her long-term engagement with Chinese leisure seals. The project explores how inherited inscriptions and seal impressions can be reactivated through contemporary painting, photography, mixed media and spatial experience.
