WHERE WATER MEETS STONE
Standing Independently Amidst Mountains and Seas No. 2 | 独立山海间（二） belongs to Jingmin Ren’s three-part XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年 — Bondi Series, created during her Bondi Pavilion Artist Studio Residency in September 2025.
In this work, a luminous wave rises and breaks against the coastal rocks. The warm orange and ochre forms of the foreground contrast with the deep blue sea, while light-filled spray appears momentarily suspended between water, air and stone.
The painting explores visible and invisible forms of energy. Visible energy is expressed through the impact of the wave, the movement of water, the radiance of light and the physical textures of the rocks. Invisible energy is suggested through wind, tidal rhythm, gravity, time and the spiritual vitality connecting different elements of the natural world.
The large red seal inscription “Standing Independently Amidst Mountains and Seas | 独立山海间” occupies the open sky, while a second seal mark is embedded within the foreground landscape. Through these different spatial positions, Chinese seal language moves between the cultural, physical and spiritual dimensions of the work.
The moment when water meets stone becomes an encounter between movement and endurance. The wave changes continuously, while the rocks appear stable; yet both are shaped by forces extending beyond what can be immediately seen. The coastal landscape therefore becomes a field of transformation rather than a fixed view.
Through the integration of painting and Chinese seal imagery, the work connects the physical energy of the Bondi coast with memory, inner perception and cultural inheritance. “Standing Independently Amidst Mountains and Seas” becomes both a visible inscription and an inner state of resilience, stillness and connection.
XINYIN LIUNIAN® | 心印流年 is Jingmin Ren’s ongoing interdisciplinary practice developed through her long-term engagement with Chinese leisure seals. The project explores how inherited inscriptions and seal impressions can be reactivated through contemporary painting, photography, mixed media and spatial experience.
