Flow of Light Series

Our Star is an oil painting from Jingmin Ren’s Flow of Light Series. Through an imaginative exploration of outer space, the work reflects on hope, transformation and humanity’s place within a universe shaped by light, movement and continual change.
At the centre of the composition, the butterfly becomes a symbol of transformation and new beginnings. Moving through a luminous cosmic field, it suggests both a personal journey and a wider human desire to travel beyond limitation, uncertainty and the boundaries of the known world.
The surrounding stars, light and flowing energy are not presented as a scientifically mapped universe. Instead, they form an inner cosmos shaped by perception, emotion and imagination. Within this space, the butterfly appears to follow light as a source of direction, renewal and possibility.
The painting also marks an important stage in Ren’s evolving artistic practice. Her earlier exploration of spiritual energy and inner light gradually expanded towards questions of astronomy, celestial movement and humanity’s relationship with cosmic time. This trajectory later contributed to her research into Solar Longitude｜太阳黄经, seasonal knowledge and the experience of time across different hemispheres.
Seen in this context, Our Star forms an early conceptual connection between the Flow of Light Series and Ren’s later interdisciplinary research. It reflects the moment when light began to be understood not only as a spiritual and emotional presence, but also as part of a larger celestial system connecting the Sun, Earth, time and human experience.
The work offers a quiet affirmation that darkness is not permanent. Within every movement through uncertainty lies the possibility of transformation—and beyond the familiar world, new paths may still be discovered.
The Flow of Light series has been presented in multiple exhibitions and public contexts in Sydney, including at the Chinese Cultural Centre in 2021, and at Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre in 2023 and 2025. Selected works from the series were also featured in digital presentations in Times Square, New York, and London in 2024, presented by Plogix Gallery.
