Sydney, March 1 – As the only Chinese artist participating in this year’s exhibition, Australian international award-winning artist Jingmin Ren presented her signature series, XINYIN LIUNIAN™ – Bondi Series, at the contemporary art exhibition “Good Together,” held at Bondi Pavilion.
Ren has pioneered a distinctive artistic language centered on traditional Eastern seal engraving aesthetics, integrating the spiritual essence of Chinese epigraphy with the natural landscape of Sydney’s Bondi coastline. Through cross-media practice, her work responds to contemporary themes of community, nature, and a sustainable future.
The exhibition, presented by Waverley Council, opened on 22 February and runs until 19 April. As a key outcome of the Council’s Artist Residency Program, the exhibition brings together eleven rigorously selected leading local artists, exploring contemporary interpretations of the question: How can we live together better in a shared community?
At the opening ceremony, Executive Manager of Arts, Culture and Events Tanya Goldberg and Bondi Pavilion Artistic Director Chris Bendall delivered speeches highlighting the exhibition’s significance in enriching the local arts ecosystem and strengthening community connection. Distinguished guests included Archibald Prize winner Frank Giacco and Australian painter Ross Harvey, among other figures from the arts and broader community.
Ren’s featured work, Standing Between Mountains and Sea, originates from her core series XINYIN LIUNIAN™. Rooted in the spiritual foundation of traditional Chinese seal carving, the series transforms the sense of time embedded in engraved “knife marks” into a contemporary visual language, expressing inner steadfastness within the flow of history. As an extended branch of the series, the Bondi Series merges the aesthetics of stone and seal with the natural energy of the South Pacific coastline, forming a unique cross-cultural visual dialogue between two temporalities.
“Creation is not merely a formal expression, but an exploration of spiritual origin,” Ren stated. “Standing Between Mountains and Sea symbolizes the inner composure one holds amidst change, and the strength to return to authenticity within a complex world.”
Australian painter Ross Harvey commented that her work “draws viewers into a higher spiritual dimension, enabling communion with a deeper reality.” Poet Ying Xia described the series as “establishing a distinctive artistic tension between tranquility and intensity, embodying spiritual connection within a cross-cultural context.”
Following the international recognition of her global touring series XINYIN LIUNIAN™, Ren has further advanced her philosophical and artistic flagship project, Yuan · Boundless. She explains: “‘Yuan’ refers to the primordial state before differentiation, while ‘Boundless’ signifies transcending the limitations of culture, geography, and language. The project seeks to explore pathways of civilizational dialogue and spiritual resonance within a globalized context.”
From XINYIN LIUNIAN™ to Yuan · Boundless, Ren’s artistic practice reveals an intellectual evolution from temporal depth toward spatial boundlessness. In today’s multicultural landscape, she responds to global issues through Eastern philosophy. Her pioneering integration of traditional seal engraving aesthetics with the Bondi coastline offers a sustained and profound exploration of cross-cultural artistic expression.
This exhibition not only showcases the excellence of local artistic practice but also provides a platform for dialogue between community, art, and nature. Within an international perspective, Jingmin Ren’s work highlights the openness and innovation of Eastern spirituality on the contemporary art stage, bringing a renewed visual and philosophical experience to Sydney’s eastern suburbs and the wider global art community.
