(Yang Dongdong)

Colours Bridging East and West

A Diaspora Heart Reflecting Mountains and Seas

Reflections on the Works of Sydney-based Chinese-Australian Artist Jingmin Ren

By Yang Dongdong , a prominent Chinese community leader in Sydney and Chairman of the Australia–China Business Summit

Visiting the exhibition hall at Bondi Beach in Sydney during the Lantern Festival of the Year of the Horse, I had the pleasure of viewing the works of renowned Chinese artist Jingmin Ren. Stepping into the gallery felt like entering a world where the brushwork of Eastern ink traditions merges with the vibrant colours of Western painting.

As a Chinese artist living overseas, Ren uses calligraphy, painting, and seal art as a bridge between cultures, blending the rich heritage of Chinese civilization with the landscapes and atmosphere of her adopted home. Each work carries both emotional warmth and philosophical depth, inviting viewers into a shared resonance.

Jingmin Ren is an internationally award-winning contemporary artist based in Sydney, Australia. She currently serves as Chairperson of the Asian Pacific Region Arts & Artists Alliance (APRAAA), an Expert Advisor to the Waverley Council Multicultural Advisory Committee, and Executive Vice President of the Australian Academy of Fine Arts.

Her works demonstrate a style that is both steady and expressive. They embody the dignity and refinement of traditional Chinese aesthetics while boldly incorporating Western approaches to light, colour, and composition. Through her creative vision, the familiar landscapes of Sydney—its mountains, sea, and urban spirit—become integrated into her artistic language.

At the same time, the elegance and cultural resonance of traditional Chinese art are presented within an international exhibition setting, creating a sense of familiarity and pride for overseas Chinese audiences while allowing local viewers to experience the beauty that emerges when Eastern and Western artistic traditions meet.

Particularly striking is Ren’s Bondi Series, especially the work Standing Between Mountains and Sea. The piece carries the dramatic contrasts of light and colour characteristic of Western oil painting while remaining deeply rooted in Chinese cultural heritage. It also reflects the artist’s emotional connection to her adopted homeland, expressing both reflection and lived experience.

Within each brushstroke lies a dialogue between tradition and the present moment, forming a distinctive and powerful artistic voice.

Most moving of all is the diaspora sentiment flowing through her work. Living abroad while remaining deeply connected to Chinese culture, Jingmin Ren uses her brush as a medium of communication and her paintings as a vessel of feeling. Through her art, she preserves and shares the spirit of Chinese artistic traditions far from their place of origin.

Her works, grounded in Eastern cultural depth yet guided by an international perspective, build bridges of cultural exchange between China and Australia. They help international audiences appreciate the beauty of Chinese art and the poetic richness of Chinese culture, while contributing meaningfully to Australia’s multicultural landscape.

This exhibition is not only a visual experience but also a moment of cultural resonance. Through her art, Jingmin Ren carries the living heritage of Chinese culture across oceans, allowing it to shine within Sydney’s leading cultural venues.

Her work reminds us that art has no borders, while culture has deep roots. Wherever one may be in the world, a sincere and devoted heart can allow Eastern and Western artistic traditions to illuminate one another—shining together on the global stage of art.
